Course Review

General

Written Thursday, July 2, 2009

A quick eighty minute drive to the north-east of Calgary yields one of the most picturesque golf courses I've ever seen nestled in the badlands of Alberta on the outskirts of Drumheller's city limits. Almost like two separate nine hole courses, due to their startling contrast, this par 72, 18 hole is, in my opinion, one that every Calgary golfer should take advantage of. A true Alberta golf experience.

Course Beauty

The Drumheller golf course borders the outskirts of the corporate limits but fully nestled in the badlands of Alberta. If you've never seen the beauty of Drumheller and the nature surrounding it, I would make sure to plan a day trip to the town to experience all it has to offer; especially if you have kids. The front nine are open, lush green (a nice contrast to the dirt and cacti in the out of bounds areas) with mature trees with wide spread branches (although look out for the large spreading tree right in front of hole 5's green). Water and flowers dot a few holes on the front nine, making it a lovely experience. However, the real beauty of the course is the back nine which weave through the badland canyons (see the golf course image gallery below). It is an indescribable golfing experience to say the least and one every golfer (in my opinion) should take advantage of at some point in his/her life. It is one thing when a golf developer makes a beautiful course; but entirely another when a developer finds a truly incredible piece of nature and preserves the beauty while carving a golf course through it.

Difficulty

The front nine play like a normal mature Alberta golf course; however, the back nine are formidably difficult. Hole 10 drives you up the side of a badland canyon to a long par 4 fairway bordered by the canyon's edges. A little to the right or left, with the Drumheller wind, will take your ball for good. The whole back nine weaves through the canyons making for spectacular views but daunting hazards with hole 14 teeing off quite a ways past your line of site. This hole ends by you ringing a huge bell to notify the foursome behind you that they can proceed teeing off (since the green is nowhere to be seen from the tee boxes). Nature note: we also saw some fairly large snakes weaving through the wet portions on the side of the fairways which could be a hazard to some :)

Personal rating

5 stars

I give this golf course 5 out of 5 stars. This isn't necessarily a reflection of a perfect course (although I was hard pressed to find problem with it); however, it is a reflection of a must-see Alberta golfing destination for every Calgary golfer.
